Turn On The Sunlight, as the name suggests, aims to uplift. Through a variety of methods and with a rotating cast of friends and family members revolving around core members Jesse Peterson and Carlos Niño, this goal provides the central guiding musical principle. Several albums and a decade of assorted collaborations have offered opportunities to explore the potential for music to promote mutual understanding and to light our collective way forward. A new album, Drives To The Beach, which features Pablo Calogero, will be released by Tokonoma Records in September 2021.
‘Kumoko Na Praia’ was conceived at the beach and is best listened to near the ocean, if possible. Thalma de Freitas and Yohei Shikano tell the story of Kumoko’s visit to Brazil and nine-year-old Ynez sings Kumoko’s name in the style of a magical flying girl channeling her favorite pop singer. Shortly before the birth of Ynez’s younger brother, Super-Mama Mia Doi Todd chimed in as well and this song was born.
Thalma de Freitas is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter of samba-jazz and Afro-Brazilian folk. She’s known for her charming performances and distinctive personality.
Her songwriting and vision has led to a wide variety of collaborations with both young and legendary musicians, such as Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, João Donato, Anelis Assumpção, Quantic, Madlib, Mateus Aleluia and Kamasi Washington. For 10 years, she was one of the crooners of Carioca big band Orquestra Imperial. In 2012, she represented Brazil in the Paralympics Closing Ceremony in London, performing with Carlinhos Brown.
Yohei Shikano is a composer and producer from Tokyo, based in Los Angeles. He makes his music outside in the garden with friends. In addition to his solo effort, Yohei created My Hawaii and is a part of Moonie Moonie. He also composed and produced the music for the feature film Hee (directed by Kaori Momoi).
